My personal high-level views aside, I think Reason+ is a great offering for new Reason users.
Reason studios software#
So, Reason+ goes against my current view on music software subscriptions. Something I really want to avoid.Īnd here lies one of my biggest problems with Reason+ in the long run- at this point for me it’s a Reason Rack Plugin first and Reason DAW second. I suspect that would be a painful decision to make and would lead to accumulation of “legacy” subscriptions draining my bank account for very little reason. However, if after a year I realize that, say, my favorite EQ plugin is no longer CompanyX-EQ (hopefully there’s no real product with this name :) but is now CompanyY-EQ, unsubscribing from the CompanyX subscription would mean “breaking” all of my older projects. If I decide to stop making music for a bit (or forever) and I stop paying for the subscription of my DAW losing access to music making software is exactly the way it’s meant to be with subscriptions - it’s a feature not a bug. While I’m happy to pay for the Studio One subscription, I’m not keen on subscribing to any plugins I use in it. My view on music software subscriptions in general PreSonus Sphere allowed me to dip my toes in Studio One without a serious upfront commitment and I’m happy to pay $15/month for it.

Reason studios full#
I subscribe to Office 365 Home (totally worth $99/year for 1TB of OneDrive for each family member alone), Adobe CC Photographer (not sure if I’m getting my money’s worth but would definitely not buy a full copy of PhotoShop otherwise), and PreSonus Sphere - basically a Reason+ for Studio One users. If in some hypothetical situation I was forced to get rid of all my music software except one, that one would still be Reason and not Studio One as I think Reason is a more versatile and complete package. So, obviously it’s hard to call me a Reason OG (even though I’ve been around throughout its history) but I’m not exactly new to Reason either. Additionally, I’ve switched to Studio One as my main host DAW about 6 months ago but I still use Reason Rack Plugin in Studio One extensively.
Reason studios license#
At the moment I have a license for Reason 11 Standard, a Backline Rig giving me a bunch of Reason Studios instruments not available in Standard, and I’ve probably bought a few Reason Studios REs separately.

I don’t know how unique my situation is - I’ve been toying with Reason demos (and ReBirth before that) for many many years but I actually bought it for the first time when it was on Reason 8 (2015?) and then I stopped making music for almost 5 years and resumed my hobby again about a year ago. And according to yesterday’s live stream there was a solid uptake from the new ones on the first day of Reason+ existence. Yesterday Reason Studios announced Reason+ - a subscription service giving subscribers everything Reason Studios makes + regular new Sound Pack releases for as long as you pay $20/month.Īs expected, there was a lot of negative sentiment from the current users who have paid thousands for their perpetual licenses and upgrades over the years.
